Rejuvenating one of the world’s most dynamic teaching museums

Dartmouth College, established in 1769 and a member of the Ivy League, is the ninth-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The original Hood Museum of Art, completed in 1985, was designed by postmodern architect, Charles Moore. It is among the largest and oldest college or university collections in the United States and is dedicated to its mission as a teaching institution.

Renovation of the existing Hood Museum and expansion into the adjacent Wilson Hall increased museum space by 40% and tripled classroom space. Gallery space for the 65,000-piece collection increased from 10 to 15 galleries. The project also included a new façade, redesigned entryways, and a new link building joining Hood and Wilson. The lower lobby includes a double-height atrium and entrance into the Museum, with the existing original stairwell running alongside allowing natural light into the galleries behind. MEPF infrastructure was upgraded and/or replaced and renovations were made to the central plant in order to accommodate the program. Information technology system design included telephone and data cabling, electronic support equipment, and infrastructure requirements.
