MDI House 9

Originally designed by Homer Rogers Architect, this 1965 seaside cottage in Mount Desert Island, Maine recently underwent a complete renovation and addition. The Baird Architects design includes an expansion of the original living and dining pavilion to include an open plan kitchen, living, and dining room with new floor to ceiling windows.

The addition includes a re-constructed forty foot glass bridge which leads to a sleeping pavilion with three bedrooms and three bathrooms.

Altieri’s work included designing an energy-efficient variable-volume fan powered by solar array and battery backup system to act as the home’s cooling in place for the typical air conditioning system. The entire house is designed to operate independently of the electrical grid due to the solar/battery system installed.

The house was featured in Maine Home + Design.
