Phillips Exeter Academy – The Goel Center for Theater and Dance
Phillips Exeter Academy is a coeducational independent high school. Established in 1781, it is one of the oldest and most highly selective secondary schools in the United States. The David E. and Stacey L. Goel Center for Theater and Dance displays Phillips Exeter’s commitment to elevating the performing arts and joins other notable campus buildings include the Class of 1945 Library designed by Louis Kahn.
Altieri designed engineering systems for the full scope of the new building including two theaters, dance performance studios, rehearsal rooms, performance support spaces, music and drama classrooms, library, lobby, and faculty offices. Our work applied building technologies that exceeded the latest energy codes and design standards, while meeting strict noise criteria within all performance spaces, and consisted of central heat pump air handling units and VRF heat pumps coupled to closed-loop geothermal system. The implemented mechanical systems, together with efficient lighting, resulted in calculated reduction of annual energy cost of 35%. Altieri’s considerable strength coordinating with design team’s members was paramount on this project which included consultants for theatrical lighting, A/V, acoustics, industrial hygiene, and geothermal well field.
